Man arrested, using cocaine to treat pain

PRYOR, OK — A search warrant was issued for the home of Joseph “Joe” Clifford, on 4330 Road in Big Cabin. The warrant was issued by Mayes County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Jason Treat, a special agent assigned to the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics, other OBN agents, Craig County Sheriff’s Office and the Delaware County

Drug Taskforce, Thursday around

3;30 p.m.

Treat said the residence was located just at the Mayes and Craig County lines, just northwest of Adair.

“We received information that there was cocaine being held at this house,” said Treat. “During the search we recovered 45 grams of cocaine, about an ounce of pot, and multiple paraphernalia items.”

Treat said the quantity of cocaine, with an estimated street value of $2,800 to $3,100, would result in a felony drug trafficking charge.

Clifford, who is said to be in his 40’s, has not been arrested yet. A warrant for his arrest has been filed.

Sources at the scene report Clifford having explained he used the cocaine as pain management, as he had been in a debilitating vehicle accident in Big Cabin that had crushed his legs and left him wheelchair bound.

Clifford, who resides with his father, reportedly told officers that in addition to pain management he had the drug because he wanted to ‘party’ with his friends for his birthday.”

If arrested Clifford may face a lower bond as the Craig County Jail is not equipped to house someone in his condition.

“It’s rare we execute a search warrant for cocaine, it’s not a rampant issue in Mayes County,” said Treat. “We see it more in the Grand Lake area, it’s more expensive and somewhat of a vanity drug.”

Treat said county deputies come across the drug only “once in a great while” on traffic stops meaning the drug is transported through town but rarely comes to town to stay.

Clifford also goes by the last name of Maly and has no prior criminal record.
