FORT GIBSON, OK —
Kansas jumped out to a 21-5 first-quarter lead and held off Salina down the stretch, eliminating the Lady Wildcats from the postseason by a 57-49 final Thursday night in the first round of a Class 3A area tournament at Fort Gibson High School.
The Lady 'Cats scored 20 points in the second quarter to cut the lead to 32-25 at the break, rebounding from their first-quarter offensive woes. Senior Kayla Morgan scored all five of Salina's first-quarter points on her way to 16 for the game, including two treys.
Morgan scored nine of Salina's 13 fourth-quarter points, including the Lady Wildcats' last seven, but it was too little, too late as Salina could not overcome an eight-point deficit heading into the final stanza.
Senior LaRae Pritchett notched nine points for the Salina, which finishes its season at 15-12. Cherish Barry was Salina's only other senior playing her last game in a Lady Wildcat uniform.
Salina's Courtney Condit added nine points, while teammate Cassi Barry pitched in with eight.
Sierra Honeycutt led all scorers with 22 points, including 14 in the first half, for Kansas (18-8), ranked 14th in Class 3A.
Salina reached the area tourney by toppling Dewey, Chelsea and Keys (Park Hill) in consecutive games in a regional tournament elimination bracket at Adair last weekend.
