The Lady Wildcats crushed Nowata, 46-22, at home Friday.
Salina played solid defense, preventing Nowata from scoring in the first period.
After a 17-point run, Nowata scored in the second period on a pair of free throws.
The Lady Wildcats led 28-6 at halftime.
Nowata made one three-pointer in the first half.
The remainder of their points came via free throws.
The visiting team only broke Salina’s full court press once in the second period.
Senior Cherish Barry was proud of their first half performance ad victory.
“We started out strong in the first half and came out in the second half and had a rough phase, Barry said. “But overall it was a decent win.”
Senior Kayla Morgan led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 15 points.
Freshman Courtney Condit also scored nine points and senior LaRae Pritchett scored six.
Pritchett is glad to get the win, but is not impressed with the team’s performance.
“It wasn’t our best game we’ve played,” Pritchett said. “We struggled in the second half, but was still able to play well enough to get the win.”
Salina improved their record to 5-3 after the victory over Nowata.
Salina dropped to 1-7 Friday after losing to Nowata 86-55.
The Wildcats led by eight when the first period came to an end, but trailed 43-33 at halftime.
The home team collapsed in the third period, beginning by giving up a nine point run and giving up an 18-point run later in the period, which did not end till the fourth.
Salina trailed 76-42 going into the final period.
Turnovers were the key factor during Salina’s breakdown.
The Wildcats turned the ball over 12 times in the third period and had a total of 36 throwaways in the game.
Junior Colton Burgess said the team needs to play harder as a unit and make better passes.
Burgess led his team in scoring and rebounds to accomplish a double-double for the game.
The forward pulled in fifteen rebounds and scored 24 points. Burgess is proud of his performance, but said it’s hard to enjoy it after a loss.
“It (getting a double-double) feels great, but it’s hard to enjoy something after a loss like that,” Burgess said.
Salina plays Chouteau Dec. 18th.
