LOCUST GROVE —
The Locust Grove girls’ basketball team picked up their first win over Salina since the 2008-09 season Tuesday.
The Lady Pirates won 55-42 to give the seniors their first victory over the school’s top rival.
Senior Becki Hendrickson answered “amazing,” when asked how it felt to beat Salina.
“It felt really good that we got to beat them our senior year,” Hendrickson said.
Little Kansas move-in Madison Davis helped lead Locust Grove to the season tipoff victory.
Davis, a sophomore post, scored 13 points and played great defense on the other end of the court. She tied with junior guard Bailey Holman as Locust Grove’s leading scorer.
Junior point guard Sydnie Pierce accounted for 12 points. Pierce, who said she was nervous in the pre-game, loosened up after dropping two three-pointers in the second period.
Salina jumped out to an early 6-0 lead to begin the game, but after the Lady Pirates made back-to-back threes to tie it up, Locust Grove never looked back.
“It’s a good way to start out the year,” Davis said about the win. “It’s a small boost of confidence for the team.”
