LOCUST GROVE —
The 16th-ranked Locust Grove Pirates defeated Catoosa Tuesday night 67-51 to improve to 13-3.
The homecoming game began with junior Taylor Halpain hitting back-to-back threes to give the Pirates an early 6-2 lead. Halpain ended the night with 11 points.
LG led by the three at the end of one, but both teams struggled offensively in the second period.
Catoosa scored three points while Locust Grove scored six to maintain a 23-17 lead at the half.
Locust Grove came up big in the third period with 28 points.
Sophomore power forward Colton Pike led the Pirates to snatch his second consecutive double-double. Pike scored 22 points and came down with ten rebounds.
Senior David Stone also scored 11 points and senior Reed Bryant scored eight.
Head Coach Ronnie Maple was satisfied with his team’s performance.
“Taylor Halpain played pretty good,” Maple said. “He did a really good job on offense. Stone hit three threes, but he got guarded, and Taylor, after the first quarter, got guarded. I thought Colton Pike did an excellent job inside again. He had another 20-point performance inside, just solid. Reed Bryant scored eight and had a solid performance. For a homecoming night, to go in and win by close to 20, it was one of those things that sometimes people loose focus when they get up by 25. I thought tonight in the fourth quarter they lost focus for a little bit,” Maple said.
The Pirates will look to continue its six game winning streak Thursday night at Vinita.
