Pryor runner-up at Tiger-Zebra Classic

PRYOR, OK — Booker T. Washington plated six runs in the third inning to run away with a 9-1 win over Pryor and the 2014 Tiger/Zebra Classic crown Saturday at American Legion Memorial Field.

The Hornets (9-5) got six straight hits from the top of the order in the third and capitalized on two Tiger errors to put Pryor in a 6-0 hole.

The Tigers (9-5) allowed 14 hits and gave up four errors.

Pryor's only run of the day crossed the plate in the bottom of the fifth on a Christian Campbell RBI single. Conley Ledoux struck out to end the inning with two runners on, however.

A Nate Wolfe groundout in the bottom of the sixth left the bases loaded, and Washington added a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to secure the win and the tournament title. Washington finished 3-1 in its tournament run.

Pryor went 2-2 in the tournament it co-hosts with Claremore.

Freshman Gaige Mendivil started against Washington and took the loss for Pryor, pitching 2 1/3 innings before Wolfe relieved him.

Earlier Saturday, Spencer Henson struck out 12 Skiatook batters in a one-hit shutout to propel Pryor to a 7-0 win in a Tiger-Zebra Classic pool game.

The Tigers scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to pull away from the Bulldogs and win their pool with a 2-1 record. Skiatook also finished with a 2-1 record but Pryor earned the tie-break with the win.

Pryor and Skiatook moved their de facto pool title game to Saturday morning from Friday night after a rain delay postponed earlier games.

Henson batted in four runs on the day, the first in the third inning on a deep sacrifice fly to score Mendivil.

Pryor loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth, and an Anthony Martinez sac fly brought home Brennon Barth. After Mendivil and Bradley Nixon singled to load the bases again, Tyler Arnold walked to score Ledoux.

Henson launched a deep fly to left field, but the Skiatook left fielder could not handle it and three more runs scored. Wolfe took the next pitch to right field, but it was also dropped by the Bulldog outfielder to score Henson.

Henson (3-0) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Jacob Helmer squirted a two-out single between the shortstop and third base.
