Daniels, Burgess lead Salina past LG

LOCUST GROVE, OK — Cody Daniels threw five no-hit innings, Colton Burgess had three RBIs and Salina overcame a slow start to trounce Locust Grove 7-1 in its season opener Monday.

The sixth-ranked Wildcats and Pirates played four scoreless innings before Salina loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth inning. LG pitcher Jeremy McFarland hit Chase Mellowbug to score the Battle of 82's first run.

After a Cale Backward single brought home another run, Burgess pushed a McFarland pitch to the rightfield wall. Burgess showed off some speed around the bags, clearing the paths with a three-run triple.

Daniels struck out five Pirates and walked three in five innings of work before Bret Fite relieved him in the bottom of the sixth. Fite allowed the Pirates' only hit of the game, a single, in the seventh after starting a 1-6-3 double play in the sixth.

Salina's Logan Gardner laced an RBI single in the sixth inning and bunted on in the fifth to load the bases.

The Wildcats had loaded the bases in the first and fourth innings and had runners at the corners in the second, but McFarland worked his way out of each jam.

Kyle Johnson batted in Bryce Kerns in the seventh inning to close the Salina scoring.
