Inola crushes Lady Pirates' state hopes

CLAREMORE, OK — Locust Grove fell just shy of a Class 4A Area consolation final appearance with a 37-35 loss to Inola in a consolation semi Friday at Claremore High School.

Six Locust Grove seniors played their final game in a Lady Pirate uniform Friday, including point guard Sydnie Pierce, who sank to the floor in agony after Karson Maple's potential game-tying baseline runner missed long.

Fellow senior starter Bailey Holman stole the ball with Locust Grove (18-8) down by one with 1:07 to play and tossed an outlet pass to Pierce for a go-ahead lay-up. Pierce traveled, however, allowing the Lady Longhorns to regain possession and push their lead to 36-33.

Pierce redeemed herself on the ensuing play, assisting Holman on a bucket with 14.7 ticks left to cut the Lady Longhorn lead to 36-35. After Inola's Kylie Rue missed the second of a pair of free throws, the ball found its way to Maple, a sophomore.

Maple's runner was contested well, and Inola's Lexi Williams secured the rebound and a chance at state Saturday.

Madison Davis led Locust Grove with 10 points, while Holman added eight and Kennedy Sokoloski netted six. Davis also snared six rebounds and handed out three assists.

Lindsey Byfield of Inola topped the scoring column with 16 points, and Williams poured in 13.

LG seniors Pierce, Holman, Mrittanie Church, Lyndsey Conner, Jensen Cooper and Kelsey Stealer went 1-1 in their only appearance in an area tournament.

LG rides third quarter shutout to easy win

CLAREMORE – Locust Grove’s girls did not allow a Newcastle basket for over 10 minutes in the second half to cruise past the Lady Racers, 53-30, in a Class 4A Area consolation game Thursday at Claremore High School.

Madison Davis racked up a game-high 18 points to lead the Lady Pirates, and Morgan Littlebear shook off some bad first-half shooting to pile on 12 points.

LG senior Bailey Holman knocked down three treys to post nine points, and Kennedy Sokoloski and Karson Maple each supplied a half-dozen.

Locust Grove began to pull away from Newcastle early, with a 15-0 run to take a 17-5 lead late in the first quarter.
