Salina tumbles twice

SALINA — The Locust Grove Pirates handed the Salina Wildcats a 3-2 defeat Monday in a high school baseball game.

The Pirates made the most of two hits and bunched three runs in the sixth inning to earn the win. Salina is ranked seventh in Class 3A.

Salina scored twice in the first inning, but could not keep the runs coming against Robert Shelly. He limited the Wildcats to three hits.

Jake Johnson started for the Wildcats and had things well in hand until Locust Grove broke through in the sixth. Johnson struck out two, but his defense committed eight errors.

Locust Grove won its fourth game against 10 losses. Salina lost its first game after 10 straight wins. The Wildcats took a  10-2 record into Tuesday’s game at Tahlequah Sequoyah.

TAHLEQUAH — Tahlequah Sequoyah pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh Tuesday and knocked off Salina, 5-4, in a high school baseball game in Tahlequah.

Sequoyah stopped the Wildcats from scoring a go-ahead run in the top of the inning, throwing out Lucien Littledave at the plate.

Then, in the home half of the inning, Eric Kirkpatrick delivered with one out, driving home Billy Sunday on a sacrifice fly and toppling the Class 3A, No. 7-ranked Wildcats.

Karter Woodruff hit two home runs for the Indians.

In the Salina seventh, Ty Stewart scored pinch runner Austin Cooper on a ground-rule double. Because the ball bounced over the outfield fence, Littledave was held at third base.

Five pitches later, Johnson flied out to right, and Littledave could not beat the throw home.

The Wildcats struck first with two runs in the third. Ty Stewart, who went 3-for-4,  drove in one run and Littledave scored on an outfield error.
