Adair advances to consolation second round

FORT GIBSON, OK — The Adair Warriors will not go silently.

Brady Bradbury canned five treys on his way to a game-high 27 points and Greg Oxford nailed two clutch free throws with 16 seconds on the clock to put the Warriors up for good in a thrilling come-from-behind 67-65 win over No. 11 Kansas in a Class 3A area tournament elimination game Thursday at Fort Gibson.

Adair, which led by nine after one quarter, trailed by three (52-49) heading into the fourth quarter.

The Warriors, ranked 16th in Class 3A, outscored the Comets 8-2 over the final 4:12 to take the lead.

The scoring run started with back-to-back treys from Jordan Fleming and Oxford, who finished with 21 and 12 points, respectively.

Fleming, who scored nine of his 21 points in the fourth quarter, hit a jumper to give Adair the 65-64 lead with 1:55 to play. Kansas' Cole Kendrick then hit the second of a pair of free throws to tie the game at 65 with 1:40 left.

After the teams traded fruitless possessions, Oxford was fouled with 16 seconds on the clock. Oxford didn't make a field goal and hadn't attempted a foul shot in the fourth quarter, but he stepped up and drained both attempts to give Adair a two-point cushion that proved to be the final margin.

Free-throw shooting proved to be the difference, especially in the fourth quarter. Adair was a perfect 6-for-6 while Kansas was just 2-of-4.

For the game, the Warriors were 14-18 (78 percent) while Kansas was 5-10 (50 percent).

Kendrick finished with a team-high 20 points. Teammates Johnny Lewis, Rowdy Chesser and Austin Hunt each pitched in nine.

Bradbury did the bulk of his damage in the third quarter, scoring a dozen of his team's 20 points in the period.

Adair will take on Keys (Park Hill) Friday at 3 p.m. in the second round of an area consolation bracket. Keys, a 44-39 winner over Westville Thursday, is ranked 15th in the state.

Adair Scorers — Bradbury 27, Fleming 21, Oxford 12, Brock Martin 5, James Eastin 2.

Kansas Scorers — C. Kendrick 20, Lewis 9, Chesser 9, Hunt 9, Casey Armbruster 8, Logan Blaine 5, Brody Kendrick 5.
