NFL Play 60 camp invites pair of LG teams

LOCUST GROVE, OK — A National Football League referee, a former NFL player, leading nutrition and physical activity experts and local dairy farmers will gather with 10 teams of elementary, middle school and high school students from three states for an NFL-themed training camp at Springdale’s Jones Center to reward their efforts to eat healthy foods and stay active.

Locust Grove will send two teams, from the Locust Grove Upper Elementary School and the Locust Grove Middle School, to the event.

The student teams earned invitations to the May 14 Fuel Up To Play 60 Reward Training Camp by actively engaging in the Fuel Up to Play 60 program by encouraging their peers to make healthier choices and commit to at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day.

Fuel Up to Play 60 is an in-school nutrition and physical activity program launched by National Dairy Council, Midwest Dairy Council and the NFL in collaboration with the United States Department of Agriculture.

Other teams attending the camp represent the following schools: Lamar Elementary School, Lamar, Ark.; Morrilton Intermediate School, Morrilton, Ark.; St. Paul School, St. Paul, Ark.; Mansfield Elementary School, Mansfield, Ark.; Mansfield Middle School, Mansfield, Ark.; Mansfield High School, Mansfield, Ark.; Taneyville Elementary School, Taneyville, Mo. and Reeds Spring Middle School, Reeds Spring, Mo.

Fuel Up to Play60 is in 73,000 schools across the nation to teach our youth the importance of eating healthy and being physically active, and do it in a way that is fun and motivating,” said Melissa Young, director of health and wellness for Midwest Dairy Council.

“Student teams participating in the training camp serve as role models for their peers,” Young added.

Participants will take part in  nutrition and physical activity sessions including: "Free the Football” led by Dr. Blair Dean, Professor in Health, Physical Education, and Sport Sciences at Arkansas State University, a lunch tray relay and nutrition discussion led by nutrition experts Monica Stewart and Rachel Casebier.

Students will interact with NFL referee Walt Coleman, NFL alumni player Steve Conley and dairy farmers Tim and Nikki Crawley and Susan Anglin.
