Grubbs clinches state tournament berth

TAHLEQUAH, OK — It was another typical Kelvin Grubbs-Mitch Sellers showdown. This time, Grubbs finished with the upper hand — and a trip to the Class 5A state tournament.

Grubbs broke a 2-2 tie with a takedown in the third period and held on to beat Tahlequah's 145-pounder, 4-3, in the semifinals of the Class 5A East Regional at Tahlequah High School.

"We knew that was going to be a dogfight," Pryor coach Roger White said of Grubbs, a senior who claimed a state tournament berth for the second year in a row.

"If those two wrestle 10 times, we're each probably going to win five."

Grubbs — who lost to Sellers, 5-4, in the finals of the Doug Rial Memorial on Feb. 1 — will face Collinsville's Will Steltzlen in the finals at 6 p.m. on Saturday. Steltzlen is a reigning state champion for the Cardinals.

Pryor is sixth in the team standings after the first day of competition with 76.5 points. Defending state champion Collinsville sits atop the leaderboard with 222 points, more than 100 points ahead of second-place Coweta (115.5). Shawnee is third with 111.

Dylan Wright is into the consolation semifinals at 120 pounds and can book a trip to Oklahoma City with a win.

Cody Foos fell in a championship semifinal to Edison's Jamal Wright at 138 pounds, but can still qualify for state with a win in the consolation semis.

Pryor's Logan Hammock (120 pounds), Konnor Godwin (132 pounds), Colby Pettus (142 pounds), Chase Biggs (160 pounds), Christian Campbell (170 pounds), Stevon Crogan (195 pounds) and Josiah Gauger (220 pounds) are all still in the race for the four state bids in each of their respective weight classes.

"I have four that have an awesome or really good chance of getting in (the state tournament)," White said. "And then the others are going to have to beat someone they haven't beat — but this is the time to do it."
