CHELSEA, OK — Senior Cale Backward scored 32 points, junior Colton Burgess added 28 and Salina took two overtimes to finally bounce Chelsea, 84-75, at Chelsea Tuesday night.

Backward scored 21 of his 32 points in the fourth quarter and overtimes, including three   3-pointers. He also went 7-of-7 at the free throw-line.

Salina (13-9) and Chelsea went to the first overtime tied at 56, then played to a 66-all tie after one extra session.

The Wildcats out-scored the Dragons 18-9 in the second overtime to earn a happy bus ride home.

Burgess scored 13 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter and overtime. Kyle Johnson added a dozen points for Salina.

In the girls’ game, Salina topped Chelsea, 57-43, for its 10th win in 11 tries.

Salina (14-8) has ridden its hot streak into the Class 3A poll at No. 20, a spot it shared with Chelsea before it blasted the Dragons to even the season series at one game apiece.

“We’ve been on a roll,” Salina head coach Mark Fraley said. “I told the girls right now we are in playoff mode.”

Cassi Barry led the way for Salina with 15 points, and teammates Courtney Condit and Shaylee Morgan each pitched in 12.

Salina led by just two (23-21) at halftime but torched the Lady Dragons for five 3s in the third quarter to open up a double-digit lead.
