SALINA, OK — Salina will open its 2014 baseball season ranked No. 6 in Class 3A, according to the first polls published Tuesday on OSSAArankings.com.

Salina racked up 441 votes in the initial poll, behind defending state champion Verdigris. The Cardinals raked in 753 points and 31 of 40 first-place votes.

Spiro, which ousted Salina from the state tournament in 2013, is second with 621 points and five first-place nods.

Marlow, Vian and Sperry begin the season ranked third, fourth, and fifth, respectively.

Salina graduated a plethora of talent from last season, including shortstop Brett Kerns, now at Connors State. Also gone are catcher Nate Holman, outfielder Ryan Humphrey, first-baseman Jake Tolbert, infielder Dillon Gardner and ace right-hander Brent Soldier.

Senior infielders Bret Fite, Mark Cowan and Cale Backward will headline the 2014 squad.
