Adair slides into 3rd-place game

ADAIR, OK — Adair split its games in the first day of the Adair Tournament to earn a spot in Saturday's third-place game.

The Warriors (6-5) opened action Thursday with a 9-1 conquest of Wyandotte in five innings.

Adair scored three runs in the bottom of the second, third and fifth innings to seal the win. Tayler Conseen struck out eight Bears and allowed one hit, a first-inning single.

Adair fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning on an error by centerfielder Brock Martin, but the bottom two batters in the order, first-baseman Justin McCollum and right fielder Bubba Kerr, each hit RBI singles in the bottom of the second to give Adair the only lead it would need.

Leadoff hitter Cody Eby went 3-for-4 and hit a two-RBI double to end the game by run-rule. Martin also had an RBI double in the fifth inning.

Kerr went 3-for-3 and batted in a run out of his ninth slot, and second-baseman Will Hefner hit a pair of singles.

The last two pool games Thursday were postponed about 90 minutes due to rain, but Verdigris won both to clinch a bid in the tourney title game Saturday at 2:45 p.m.

Class 3A's top-ranked Cardinals shut out Wyandotte 15-0 before hitting the hosts with a 10-0 defeat in the nightcap.

In Friday's games, Dewey beat Commerce 12-0, Kansas ripped Commerce 23-8 and Kansas took the Pool B title by edging Dewey, 5-4.

Adair will take on Class 4A's No. 3 Dewey Saturday at 12:15 p.m. for third place. Kansas and Verdigris will contend for the tournament title at 2:45 p.m.
