'Cats eclipse Warner to start 1-0

CHOUTEAU, OK — The Chouteau football team shook the monkey off its back Thursday night, edging Warner 24-18 to begin its 2013 campaign.

The Wildcats (1-0) had the game circled on their calendars for months and gained a little revenge against an Eagles team that beat them 40-0 last year.

"They're a good football team. It felt good, and our kids played really hard, and that's what it takes," CHS head coach Mark Jones said.

Garrett Grossman scored a pair of rushing touchdowns in the first half, and the Wildcats converted both two-point conversions to take a 16-0 lead.

Warner would return the ensuing kickoff for a score, however, and Chouteau led by just 10 heading into the locker room.

"Our special teams suffered tonight, with the kickoff return and another punt they returned inside the five," Jones said.

Warner capitalized on the good field position to shave the score to 16-12 in the third quarter before Robert Evans muscled the ball over the goal line late in the game. Austin Hershberger's two-point run gave Chouteau a 24-12 cushion.

A late Warner TD would provide the final 24-18 tally.

Chouteau stayed to the ground for much of the night. Quarterback Doug Mynahan's first two passes were intercepted, including the first play of the game, and he would finish just 2-of-5 through the air.

"We didn't throw the ball very well," Jones said.

Chouteau is riding a two-game winning streak dating back to last season, and will try to extend that streak to three in a row when they travel to Summit Christian. Chouteau lost last year's contest, 22-15.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
