Salina bests Adair

SALINA, OK — Salina batters took advantage of early fielding errors and Wildcats pitchers Jake Tolbert and Brock Thomas combined to shut out Adair 7-0 in action Tuesday night at Salina.

Adair freshman hurler Cody Eby had a miserable first inning, giving up a lead-off double to Brett Kerns and then hitting three consecutive Wildcats with pitches to score Kerns and load the bases.

Salina's Dillon Gardner and Kyle Johnson each hit RBI singles in the first inning. Johnson's scored Tolbert and Gardner to push the lead to 6-0 before Thomas struck out and Kerns flied out to end the inning.

Eby calmed down to throw two shutout innings before being relieved by fellow freshman Taylor Conseen to start the fourth inning.

Salina added another run in the fourth off of a Cale Backward ground ball, which scored Kerns.

Adair catcher Alec Brand had a 2-for-3 day at the plate, notching a pair of singles.

Winning pitcher Tolbert allowed just one hit and fanned three in three innings before Thomas relieved him in the fourth. Thomas gave up a pair of hits and struck out three Warriors.

Salina improved to 12-7 on the year after taking on the roughest stretch of its schedule. Adair fell back below .500 (8-9) after its third straight loss.
