OKLAHOMA CITY, OK —
Salina senior and lone state qualifier, Cullen Patterson, fell just short of a Class 3A state title in Oklahoma City Saturday after falling to Owen Simpson of Tonkawa, 8-6, in a 120-pound final.
Patterson (32-5) led most of the match and had Simpson down 6-5 until Simpson scored an escape and take-down with under eight seconds left to take an 8-6 lead.
Patterson entered the finals by upsetting the top seed out of the West, Noah Nida of Perry, with a pin in the final period. Patterson defeated Madill’s Tyler Ramirez with a 13-8 decision in the opening round.
Perry won the Class 3A state title with 118 total team points and Tonkawa finished second with 82. Patterson single-handedly gave Salina 16 points, tying for seventh with Douglass, better than 16 other schools.
