Salina scored two defensive touchdowns and a safety in the first quarter to pound Kansas 47-13 and wrap up second place in District 2A-8 Friday.
Kyle Johnson scored on a five-yard run and a 30-yard pick-six and kicked a 34-yard field goal to open the game for the Wildcats (8-2, 6-1 2A-8), who will host Pawhuska (4-6) in a first round game Nov. 15. The 'Cats added a safety and a 54-yard Jon Parsons fumble return to push the lead to 26-0 at the end of one.
Senior running backs Damon Gourd and Bret Fite added scoring runs in the second quarter to give Salina a 40-0 advantage over the Comets (6-4, 4-3) at halftime.
Ysidrio Cardenas added the final nail in the coffin with a 2-yard plunge in the fourth quarter.
Salina returns to the playoffs for the first time since 2010 and will host a playoff game for the first time since 2009. The Salina-Pawhuska winner will play the winner of Vian-Haskell in Round 2.
