SALINA, OK —
Salina quarterback Bret Lococo guided the Wildcats to 59-0 win over Quapaw in the freshman’s first career start on senior night Friday.
Lococo, playing in relief of injured senior quarterback Cale Backward, hit Cullen Patterson for a 34-yard scoring strike to open the game and ran in another TD in the third quarter to lead the ‘Cats (7-2, 5-1 District 2A-8).
The Wildcats can wrap up sole possession of second place in the district with a win at Kansas (6-3, 5-2 2A-8) Friday. A loss would drop Salina into a second-place tie with Kansas and possibly Colcord, which could mean a trip to face No. 8 Nowata in the first round of the playoffs. A second-place finish would result in a first-round visit from a sub-.500 team, most likely Pawhuska.
Seven different Wildcats found the end zone Friday. Senior Bret Fite passed the century mark on his two scoring runs (68 and 34 yards) and fellow senior Jon Parsons scored on a one-yard plunge in the first quarter before adding an 81-yard scamper in the second.
Another senior, Damon Gourd, tallied a 48-yard scoring run to help give Salina a 31-0 lead after one quarter of play.
Ysidrio Cardenas added a one-yard scoring run and Logan Gardner returned a Quapaw pass 27 yards for a score.
