Pryor eclipses Coweta in wild overtime win

COWETA, OK — Brennon Barth ran for five touchdowns, including the eventual game-winner in overtime, to send Pryor into a frenzy with its first district win, a 42-41 win at Coweta Friday night.

Three times after halftime Pryor (2-2, 1-0 District 5A-4) held leads of at least seven points, but it was the Pryor defense that ended up giving the Tigers the win.

Barth punched the ball in from 10 yards out to give Pryor a 42-35 lead and Anthony Martinez kicked in the crucial extra point. Caleb Wheeler's four-yard run brought the score to 42-41, but Coweta's two-point conversion run attempt was stuffed, giving Pryor a miraculous victory.

The celebration was well-earned after Pryor squandered a big lead in last week's loss to Miami.

Wheeler sprinted into the end zone from 58 yards out to give Coweta a 7-0 lead in the first quarter before Pryor scored 28 unanswered points. Barth scored on an 8-yard run in the first quarter and a 12-yard scamper in the second, followed up by an 18-yard pass ing score to Matt McGouldrick before halftime.

Barth's 33-yard run in the third gave Pryor a commanding 28-7 lead. Coweta's Ryan Fitzsimmons found Sam Dawes in the end zone for a 15-yard score to shave the lead to 28-14 before Wheeler scored on a one-yard plunge. The kick was missed, making the score 28-20 Pryor.

Barth would score on a 44-yard run to reopen the lead to 35-20 heading into the final stanza.

Wheeler scored twice in the final period, from one and 25 yards out, to pressure Pryor. Wheeler's two-point conversion run late in the fourth tied the game at 35 and sent the game to overtime.

Barth was 9-for-12 through the air for 141 yards and a score. Pryor rumbled for 301 yards on 50 carries as a team on its way to a season-high 22 first downs. Coweta racked up 335 rushing yards on 42 totes.

Coweta was penalized nine times for 82 yards, while Pryor was flagged twice for 15 yards.

Pryor will host its first district game next week, a Friday date with East Central for homecoming. Festivities will begin at 6:30 and kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
