LOCUST GROVE — Locust Grove improved their record to 3-1 Tuesday night after defeating Hilldale at home.

The Pirates won 58-45 behind point guard David Stone.

The senior led Locust Grove in scoring for the fourth consecutive game with 23 points.

Fifteen of Stone’s points came from beyond the arc, consisting of five three-pointers.

Senior Reed Bryant had a solid game, scoring 13 points and pulling in seven rebounds as a small forward.

Locust Grove started the night behind 2-0 after missing on three straight three point attempts.

After tying the ballgame 4-4, thanks to made free throws from sophomore Colton Pike, the Pirates went on a 10-point run to take a 12-4 lead.

LG never trailed again.

Head Coach Ronnie Maple was pleased with how his team performed in the first three quarters.

“For three quarters we really played well,” Maple said. “I thought for three quarters we did exactly what we wanted to do. We did a really excellent job defensively.”

Maple’s defense stole the ball seven times from the Hornets.

Offensively, Maple said the team needs to improve on getting the ball inside more.

“I think we need to continue to work on getting it inside, using our strength,” said Maple. “I think Reed (Bryant) and Colton (Pike) do an excellent job inside. I just think our offensive execution seems to work better when we get the ball inside and we get open shots on the outside by just working the inside-out game.”

Locust Grove’s next game is Friday at Jay. The Bulldogs are currently 1-4 with a win over Salina.

Girls

The Lady Pirates capitalized with a big win over Hilldale Tuesday night.

Locust Grove won 61-56 in a close, back and forth game.

There were eight lead changes between the evenly matched teams.

Head Coach Tim Brown said he was proud of how hard his team played.

“They played really hard,” said Brown. “That’s probably the hardest they’ve played in a long time, so I was really proud of them.”

The Lady Pirates played especially well on the defensive end of the court in the first period.

They forced the Lady Hornets to turn the ball over eight times by pressuring them into bad passing decisions.

Running a full court press helped Locust Grove create an early lead.

LG led 15-12 at the end of the first period with substantial help from point guard Sydnie Pierce, who scored seven points in the period.

After a rocky second period, Locust Grove went into the locker room down by one.

Sophomore Madison Davis came up huge in the third period, scoring 12 points to give the Lady Pirates the lead again.

Davis, Locust Grove’s leading scorer, ended the game with 26 points and six rebounds.

Davis has led Locust Grove in scoring every game thus far, and Brown said he’s been expecting that type of performance out of her all year.

“Madison means a lot to us. We’ve been expecting that of her for the whole season and this is the first time I really felt like she’s starting to step into the role that we need her to,” Brown said.

The Lady Pirates maintained the lead in the fourth period to capture the win and improve their record to 3-1 on the season.
