Pirates thwart Grove

Locust Grove’s Preston Bean survived a late rally by Grove Tuesday and pitched the Pirates to a 6-5 high school baseball victory in Grove.

With the tying run on third, Bean struck out Benny Steffenson, then retired Jake Spychalski on a fly out to end the game.

Bean escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fifth, striking out the final two batters. Then, he stranded two more in the sixth.

The Pirates opened a 6-0 lead before the Ridgerunners starting chipping away at the deficit.

Bean issued nine walks, but was able to make the pitches when he needed.
