Pryor pair makes state podium

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — It wasn’t exactly what Pryor head wrestling coach Roger White wanted, but two podium placements at the Class 5A state wrestling tournament this weekend in Oklahoma City is no small feat.

Senior Cody Foos racked up a runner-up finish at 138 pounds, Kelvin Grubbs brought home bronze at 145 and Pryor finished 13th as a team.

Foos (46-7) went 2-0 Friday and advanced to Saturday’s final round against Collinsville’s Gary Wayne Harding. Harding, a rare three-time state champion, earned his fourth title with a 16-0 tech fall against Foos.

“That was a tall order, to beat him [Harding],” Pryor head coach Roger White said. “Cody kind of wrestled above his head to reach the finals.”

Grubbs, a senior, earned bronze with a 2-0 record Saturday after a 4-3 loss to Tahlequah’s Mitch Sellers sent him to the consolation bracket.

Grubbs (45-7) decisioned Duncan’s Hunter Kelly 7-3 in a consolation semi before earning an 8-3 win over Piedmont’s Francisco Lopez in the final. White coached Lopez last season as the Wildcats’ head coach.

“We set goals at the beginning of the year,” White said. “I wanted to get four medals and finish in the top 10. Not having (113-pounder Logan) Litke at state stung; it was pretty tough.

“We fell short this year ... but I was really happy with how things went my first year.”

Collinsville ran away with the team competition with 148.5 points, three state champions, seven medalists and nine podium finishes. Lawton MacArthur (107 points) and Altus (69.5) finished second and third, repsectively.
