KANSAS, OK —
As the old saying goes, the third time's the charm.
For Kansas, it took three tries, but the Lady Comets finally found a way to knock off Class 3A's No. 18 Salina, 47-43, at Kansas Saturday in the a district tournament final.
The loss drops the Lady Wildcats (15-9) into a regional consolation bracket, where they will face Westville Thursday at Spiro. Salina is set to tip off at 1:30 p.m.
Salina eked out a 22-21 halftime lead behind 13 first-half points from sophomore forward Courtney Condit. Condit would finish with a game-high 20 points.
Salina led 31-30 heading to the fourth quarter, but missed all three of its free throws in the final frame. Ty Sizer scored eight of her 12 points in the stanza to help the Lady Comets outscore Salina 17-12.
Cassi Barry scored 10 points to aid the Lady Wildcats' cause, and Morgan Littlefield added eight.
Tailee Reding scored 14 points to lead Kansas, and Janessa Raith netted 11.
The 14th-ranked Lady Comets dropped a pair of regular-season contests to the Lady Wildcats, losing 49-41 Jan. 21 and 34-33 a week later on a Barry lay-up with 1.5 seconds to play.
Comets pound Wildcats
KANSAS — Casey Armbrister scored 18 points for Kansas to boost the Comets past Salina, 66-51, in a 3A district championship game Saturday at Kansas.
Cale Backward scored 22 points for the Wildcats (14-10), which falls into a regional consolation bracket at Spiro. Salina will open the regional Thursday against Westville at 3 p.m.
Kyle Johnson poured in 11 points and Colton Burgess poured in 10 for the Wildcats, who have already increased their win total from 2012-13 by 11.
