SALINA, OK —
Salina senior Cale Backward scored 28 points to lead the Wildcats past visiting Chouteau Friday, 55-50.
Backward scored 18 in the second half to lead Salina (14-9) back from a four-point halftime deficit. He also went 9-of-10 at the free throw line.
Chouteau (13-8) got double-figure scoring from sophomore Trenton Pierce (14 points), freshman Champ Bridges (12), and juniors Arlis Alsip and Isaac Carter (10 apiece), but could not build on their strong defensive second quarter. Chouteau allowed Salina just five points in the quarter.
Salina junior forward Colton Burgess scored 13 points for the Wildcats, marking the second-straight game he and Backward have combined for at least 41 points. The duo scored 60 against Chelsea Tuesday.
Chouteau, which knocked off Caney Valley 51-7 Thursday night, will host Hulbert Monday before heading to Colcord Friday for a Class 2A district tournament. Chouteau will take on Fairland.
Salina, which celebrated senior night Friday, has wrapped up its home slate and will begin postseason play at Kansas Feb. 22 in a Class 3A district tournament.
In the girls' game, Salina continued its hot streak, topping Chouteau's Ladycats 79-49.
Salina (15-8) has won five straight games and 11 of its last 12 heading into a rematch with No. 14 Kansas Feb. 22. Salina has beaten the Lady Comets twice this season.
