LOCUST GROVE, OK — The Locust Grove boys are peaking at just right the time, upsetting Class 4A No. 6 Fort Gibson, 84-79, Tuesday night at Pirate Arena to improve to 16-2.

“Man, I am extremely proud of every one of my boys, how hard they worked in practice this week, how much they prepared,” LG Head Coach Ronnie Maple said. "I can tell you, I honestly believe my kids went into this game just wanting it extremely bad and after coming home from Fort Gibson being up the majority of the game  [a 50-46 loss at Fort Gibson Jan. 3] and coming back with a win [tonight]. I was extremely, extremely proud of them, the way they battled and fought the whole time."

Every LG starter scored in double-figures to pave the way for the upset, led by junior forward Colton Pike's 23 points. Senior captain Taylor Halpain scored 19 and Zack Robinson posted 15 while adding six assists and four steals.

LG's Tyler Rowland continued his hot streak with 13 points and Mason Fine dropped 12.

The No. 11 Pirates went into the locker room trailing 47-46, but began the second half with a Fine 3 to take the lead. The Tigers answered with a Chris Simpson layup to tie the game at 49, but Locust started a 10-0 run to take a lead they would not give up.

Fort Gibson entered the final frame with a 6-point deficit (63-57) and put up a fight with six fourth-period treys, but fell short in the end.

Fort Gibson’s Jordan London led all scorers with 32 points and drained six shots from beyond the arc. Coleman Crawley chipped in with 16 and Stephen Edwards added 12.

Locust Grove will travel to Vinita Friday night for a Valentine's Day showdown, but the Hornets will not be showing any love to the Pirates. Locust defeated Vinita 55-54 in January at Pirate Arena thanks to a Jason Pirtle buzzer-beating lay-up.

The two will square off after the girls’ game, which is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Lady Pirates squander lead, fall in OT

LOCUST GROVE — Locust Grove's Lady Pirates fell just shy of upsetting unbeaten Fort Gibson Tuesday, falling to the Lady Tigers 59-55 in an overtime thriller at Pirate Arena Tuesday.

Locust Grove (13-5) held a narrow 23-20 lead at the break. The lead ballooned to 12 at one point in the third period, and Locust headed into the fourth quarter with a 43-35 lead over the 19-0 Lady Tigers.

Fort Gibson, ranked first in Class 4A, tied the game at 50 with under 30 seconds left in the fourth period and had a shot to win in regulation, but Morgan Littlebear blocked the potential game-winner to force overtime.

Fort Gibson struck first in overtime with a lay-up, but Holman answered with a shot from downtown to give Locust Grove a 53-52 lead. After Holman’s trey, the Lady Tigers went on a 5-0 run until a Sydnie Pierce lay-up, which would be the Lady Pirates’ final points of the game.

A pair of free throws by Savannah Gray sealed the Fort Gibson win and helped the Lady Tigers avoid a huge upset by the No. 8 Lady Pirates.

Kennedy Sokoloski tied Fort Gibson’s Allie Glover as the game’s leading scorer with 14 points. Madison Davis scored 12 points and pulled in seven rebounds for Locust and Pierce added 10 points. Fort Gibson’s Jayme Hill posted 12 points.
