LG’s Houser finds a groove in May

LOCUST GROVE, OK — Former Locust Grove pitcher Adrian Houser has found a groove in the month of May after a shaky April. Houser won three of his last four starts for Houston Astros Single-A affiliate Quad Cities River Bandits and sliced his ERA to 3.77.

“I think that I’ve had a better mindset throughout the game and not just for a few innings. I’ve stayed focused a lot better and I think that’s helped a lot,” Houser said.

Houser began May with a rough outing, giving up five runs in 3 2/3 innings against the Beloit Snappers, an Oakland Athletics affiliate.

The Houston prospect bounced back in his next start against Beloit at home, throwing six shutout innings while fanning seven batters. Houser also picked up his first win since 2012 when he was with the Astros’ rookie ball affiliate in Greeneville, Tenn.

“It was nice to get my first W in a long time, but I don’t really care about my wins as long as I can go out and give my team a chance to win games,” Houser said.

Houser, who leads the pitching staff in starts, pitched his second consecutive shutout six days later, this time in five innings.

After 13 innings of shutout baseball, Houser gave up a run in the third inning against the Burlington Bees May 20. That was the only run Houser gave up in the game to pick up his third straight victory in six innings of work.

Houser received a no-decision in a May 26 start at Burlington. He threw five innings and allowed three runs.

Houser will most likely see the mound again Saturday against the Wisconson Timber Rattlers.
