Locust Grove came away with a demanding 66-49 victory Friday night at Wagoner. The Pirates led 32-20 at halftime thanks to point guard David Stone, who scored 14 points in the first half. Stone tied with junior shooting guard Taylor Halpain as the leading scorer with fourteen points apiece. Stone has led the team in scoring and is averaging 18.7 points through the first three games of the season. Head Coach Ronnie Maple says that Stone is “one of the good ones.”
“He’s a really good defender, I always bring that up first. And David can score, he can just flat out score,” said Maple. “He finds ways to get to the rim and he’s got a great shot.”
Freshman guard Mason Fine also scored 18 for the Pirates, all coming in the fourth period. Locust had a big fourth period to extend their final lead to eighteen. Maple was proud of his team’s overall performance Friday night.
“When you got your two seniors not having their best game, and to win by eighteen, I think the young kids came through and played a lot better,” said Maple.
