LOCUST GROVE, OK — The Class 3A No. 5 Locust Grove dual wrestlers swept their home triangular Tuesday night, including victories over Hulbert and rival Salina.

The Pirates improved to 8-1 after defeating Hulbert 60-18 and Salina 70-12. The Wildcats fell to 4-12 after ending the night 0-2.

Locust Grove has gone 8-0 since the football season ended and captured a district title last week. Locust was missing wrestlers in five weight classes, including All-American Dustin Remer at 220 pounds.

“It’s just getting all your guys. Our football players still aren’t in top shape yet, they’ve just been in for a month now, but we’re getting there,” LG head coach Johnny Cook said. Cook credits his team’s success to a tough schedule, which includes visits to prestigious tournaments in Perry, Geary, Yukon, and Reno, Nev.

“We wrestle the toughest schedule in the state,” said Cook. “I have kids who haven’t even placed in a tournament yet. Up until a week ago, I only had four guys with winning records, because of the competition we’ve seen. The competition we’ve been in, we’re just fighting to survive and so my kids are accustomed to going six minutes in a fight and hopefully that pays off at the end. It’s been my strategy for 30 years, so we’ll see if it continues to work.”

Cook has won two state titles in his 24 years at Locust Grove and has had the Pirates consistently ranked in the top 10 over the past two decades.

Locust Grove will travel to Yukon this weekend for its eighth tournament of the season.

Salina will head to Sperry Thursday night with matches set to begin at 5 p.m.
