Locust Grove was crowned champions of the Pryor Invitational Tournament Saturday night after crushing Vinita 63-43.
The Pirates never trailed, after taking an early 3-0 lead. Head Coach Ronnie Maple was pleased with his team’s performance against the Hornets.
“Anytime you can go beat a good, solid basketball team like Vinita that’s a bonus,” Maple said. “I thought our kids played defensively really well the last five games and offensively I think we took a baby step today with my young kids handling pressure”.
Forward Reed Bryant started the game hot and never cooled off, to get a double-double. Bryant led all scorers with 18 points and pulled in 10 rebounds. The senior may have played the best game of his career in order to lead his team to a championship.
After the game, Bryant was honored with the tournament MVP award and received a standing ovation from the Locust Grove crowd after fouling out in the fourth period. Maple had high praises for his senior captain.
“Through the whole tournament (Bryant’s) been solid,” Maple said. “I think tonight he took a big step, it seems every time we play Vinita, Reed seems to have his game on. He missed a couple of easy shots early, and he scored about 12by halftime. He just kind of smoothed everything around; he did an excellent job of just being patient, passing when he needed to pass, and scoring when he needed to score. He just did a really good job all tournament long.”
Bryant was not the only Locust player to step up, the Pirates had four players score double digits. Sophomore Colton Pike also worked to a double-double with 17 points and 16 rebounds.
Senior David Stone scored 12 points and junior Taylor Halpain scored 13.
Stone and Pike also received All-Tournament team honors.
