Locust Grove advanced past the first round of the Bank of Locust Grove Invitational Tuesday by defeating Salina 81-43.
The Pirates began the night with a slow start, but their young talent helped them gain momentum.
Freshman guard Mason Fine came off the bench to score 11 points for Locust Grove; six came in the first half.
Sophomore power forward Colton Pike scored 14 points and pulled in seven rebounds.
With his young talent stepping up, Head Coach Ronnie Maple said the game was a good team win.
The Pirates began the second half ahead by 21.
Seniors David Stone and Reed Bryant led the team in the second half.
Stone scored 15 points and Bryant scored 18 to lead the team in scoring. Bryant’s highlight of the night was a dunk in the third quarter, which ignited the crowd.
Junior Taylor Halpain also scored eight points and sophomore Tyler Rowland scored seven.
The Pirates advance to the semifinals with a good chance to make the finals. Maple had little to say about the future of his team in the tournament.
“I’ll be out there scouting tomorrow for Chouteau-Westville and we’ll see who wins that game, then kind of go from there,” Maple said.
Locust Grove plays their semifinal matchup Thursday at 8:45 p.m.
