County stars on Lake O' the Cherokee rosters

PRYOR, OK — Nine Mayes County basketball players have been selected for the 2014 Lake O' the Cherokee All-Star Classic May 15 at Vinita High School.

Four-time state qualifiers Molly Kerr and Bailey Stephens of Adair will headline the girls game at 6:30 p.m., followed by Mayes County Boys Player of the Year, Salina's Cale Backward, tipping off at 8 p.m.

A pair of Locust Grove seniors, Sydnie Pierce and Bailey Holman, along with Salina's Kaisee Moore, will join the fray alongside Kerr and Stephens. Adair's Jenny Fleming is an alternate on the girls' South roster.

The South girls will be coached by Jay's Corey Henton and Colcord's Jeremy Scott.

Joining Backward on the boys South roster is another Salina product, Mark Cowan, and one player each from Locust Grove and Adair. The Pirates will send Taylor Halpain and the Warriors will send Greg Oxford.

Adair's Taylor Gilmer will be an alternate for the South team, coached by Rick Hendren of Colcord and Terry Sweeney of Jay.

The Lake O' the Cherokee All-Star Classic is an annual game honoring senior basketball players from area programs.

This year's doubleheader will feature players from Adair, Afton, Bluejacket, Colcord, Grove, Jay, Kansas, Locust Grove, Miami, Oaks-Mission, Quapaw, Salina, Vinita, and Welch.
