Osborne reaches milestone in senior night sweep

PRYOR, OK — Spencer Henson hit a pair of home runs, Foster McCollough added a round-tripper of his own and the Pryor Tigers cruised to Gerald Osborne's 300th and 301st wins as the Tigers’ head coach in a doubleheader sweep of district foe Northwest Classen Monday on senior night.

“I’ve been very blessed to coach very good players, work at a good school with a good administration with good coaches around,” Osborne said of his accomplishment.

Henson’s first-inning blasts, a three-run shot in the 16-1 opening win and a two-run homer in the 11-0 nightcap, helped the Tigers (16-9) to    10-0 leads in each game.

In the late game, Conley Ledoux and Kelvin Grubbs teamed up to no-hit the hapless Knights in 4 1/2 innings. The Tigers also run-ruled Northwest in the opener.

“I feel like we’ve improved, gotten a lot better,” Osborne said. “We’ve won some games we probably shouldn’t have, and we haven’t lost any games where I felt we gave it away. For the most part, we’ve gotten better on our way through, and we’re playing pretty well right now.”

Several Tigers are starting to peak, including the three seniors on the squad — second baseman Casey Holloway, pitcher/outfielder Zack Hammock and first baseman Foster McCollough — who were honored with plaques between games.

Holloway stole four bases and batted in two runs over the doubleheader. Hammock, playing in left field, had a pair of singles to go with three RBIs and McCollough swatted a two-run homer.

Freshman Anthony Martinez had a good day as well, picking up a win on the mound in the opener and a pair of extra base hits in the late game, including a stand-up RBI triple. Nate Wolfe added a pair of doubles.

Pryor is in the midst of a four-game winning streak and will next head to McAlester for the McAlester Shootout this weekend before resuming district play next week — a home-and-home with McAlester sandwiched in between makeup games at Nathan Hale (Monday) and Durant (Friday).

“It’s pretty well going to decide where we go for regionals,” Osborne said. “We could end up anywhere from second to fourth, so all the rest of them will be pretty important.”

On Friday, the Tigers were outhit by Nixa (Mo.) but beat the Eagles, 5-2 at Pryor.

Hammock (6-2) picked up the win and Grubbs came in in the seventh to pick up the save.

Nixa got 12 hits and tied the game at 2 in the top of the sixth inning, but the Tigers, who managed just four hits, scored the three go-ahead runs in the bottom of the sixth.
