PRYOR, OK —
Madison Davis tallied 16 points to help Locust Grove surge to a 21-point lead and hold on late to defeat Collinsville, 54-47, in Pool A action Monday in the Pryor Invitational Tournament.
Sophomore Karson Maple provided the spark for the Class 4A No. 10 Lady Pirates (9-2) after a molasses first quarter, which saw Locust Grove take a slim 9-8 lead over the 5A No. 5 Lady Cardinals.
"We looked a little sluggish, couldn't really get much going," LG head coach Justin Brown said. "Karson Maple comes in and hit a couple 3s and a jump shot to really open the game ... It was really a team effort."
Maple scored all eight of her points in the second quarter, including a pair of treys. The Lady Pirates relied heavily on the long ball, netting four in the second quarter to expand their lead to seven (29-22) at the half.
In the third quarter, Locust Grove shot ahead by 17, minimizing the inside efforts of Collinsville center Mallory Vaughn. Vaughn finished with a game-high 22 points but became a black hole on offense, turning the Collinsville attack one-dimensional and opening the floor for the Lady Pirates.
Locust Grove jumped out to a 21-point fourth quarter lead thanks to crisp passing and good ball-handling. With about six minutes to go, though, the offense stiffened and the points stopped flowing.
"We have a problem. This is the second or third time we've had a big lead going into the fourth quarter and throw it in cruise control," Brown said. "We're trying to do the right things, but we're just getting too conservative. We just have to finish ball games."
The Lady Pirates turned the ball over four times in the last six minutes, compared to just three in the first 26 minutes. However, Locust's lead was large and late enough that it was able to hold off the furious rally and move into a likely pool title game Friday at 7:15 p.m. against Class 3A No. 1 Adair, which plays Collinsville today.
"We'll get some boys in there to mimic the pressure that they will put on," Brown said, referring to his upcoming practice sessions. "We've seen some teams that put on similar pressure."
Bailey Holman scored 12 points for Locust Grove. Morgan Littlebear added 10 points and three steals. Davis totaled six rebounds, four steals and handed out three assists.
Fine, Pirates coast to blowout win
PRYOR — Mason Fine scored 14 points, Colton Pike notched 13 and Locust Grove improved to 10-1 on the season with a 58-35 walloping of Collinsville in Pool A play Monday in the Pryor Invitational Tournament.
The Cardinals never led in the game and managed just 11 first-half points. Locust Grove pushed its margin to as many as 26 points in the fourth quarter before taking its foot off the gas pedal.
Zach Robinson scored a dozen points for the Pirates, including eight in the first half. LG head coach Ronnie Maple did not sub in a player until the 3:35 mark of the second quarter, enough time for the starters to take a 20-6 lead.
Zach Bailey came off the bench and scored seven points for the Pirates, who will take on Adair in a Pool A game Friday at 8:45 p.m.
