D.A.R.E. softball tournament back for second year

PRYOR, OK — The Pryor Police Department will host its second-annual D.A.R.E. Coed Softball Tournament in July.

School Resource Officer Jeremy Cantrell started the tournament last year, and after a successful turnout will host the event for the second summer in a row next month.

"It's a way to fund the D.A.R.E. program so the school doesn't have to pay for it," Cantrell said. "It's an idea we got at officer training to raise money."

The 2013 tournament attracted 11 teams and raised over $3,000 for the school's D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program.

"We had some good sponsors for the tournament for the first year," Cantrell said. "That $3,000 will run about the whole year, as far as the D.A.R.E. program goes."

This year's tournament sponsors include Walmart, Stephens Memorial Chapel, Shipman's Funeral Home, Ages Computers, Roberts, Northstar Church, Integris Mayes County Medical Center, Hooks 1-Stop and Masonic Lodge #100.

Cantrell said he has already had a few MidAmerica Industrial Park companies express interest in sponsoring teams, and is hoping for more. "If a company wants to sponsor a team, they are more than welcome to."

There are 16 slots available for the tournament, which will be Friday and Saturday, July 18-19, at the Pryor church league softball fields. Cantrell said five slots have already been filled.

The entry fee is $100 for teams or $200 for teams who want T-shirts.

The event itself, however, is free. "Anyone can come out and watch," Cantrell said. "We'll have tents and sprinklers out there this year so people can keep cool."

Cantrell said the police and fire departments have yet to field a team, but he hopes he can bring back some of the Pryor firemen who served as umpires last year.

The deadline to enter is July 11. For more information, contact Cantrell at 918-373-0993 or the Pryor Police Department at 918-825-1212.
