Nowata eliminates skidding Chouteau

CHOUTEAU, OK — Although it wasn’t impossible, the Chouteau Wildcats still had a small glimmer of playoff hope going into Friday night’s game. The only problem was that game was against the No. 8 team in Class 2A.

Nowata (8-1, 4-1) started quick and didn’t let up, cruising to a 64-6 win against the Wildcats on Senior Night. The loss officially knocks the Wildcats out of playoff contention.

The Ironmen scored on just their fourth play from scrimmage, when Cory Hobbs scampered 63 yards for the score. The Wildcats simply had a hard time moving the football. They finished with only 11 yards rushing and no passing yards or completions.

Chouteau’s lone score came with 3:42 left in the first half. After a Nowata touchdown, senior Michael Ford returned the ensuing kickoff 74 yards down to the Nowata 9-yard line. Four plays later, fellow senior Austin Hershberger scored from a yard out, cutting the Nowata lead to 34-6.

The Chouteau loss was the Wildcats’ fifth in a row, after starting the season 3-1. During those first four games of the year, Chouteau was averaging 25 points a game. Since then, the Wildcats are only averaging six points per game.

Chouteau, which finished district play with a 1-5 record, will travel to Canadian next Friday night for the season finale.
