Aubrey's hat trick pushes Pryor past Memorial

PRYOR, OK — PRYOR — Pryor's Lady Tigers soccer squad, behind a second-half hat trick from team captain Karissa Aubrey, cruised to a 5-0 win over district foe Tulsa Memorial Thursday night at Pryor.

"She's a warrior. I know she'd rather I call her a beast, that's her saying," PHS head coach Kirk Emerine said of Aubrey. "She'll run through a brick wall if she thinks there will be a goal on the other side. She's so aggressive. She's a handful for any player to take on. She's all about hard work and determination."

Despite the lopsided result, the Class 5A No. 6 Lady Tigers (2-2, 1-0) scored just once in the first half on a Carman Silas goal in the 26th minute. The Tigers played aggressively but didn't see results on the scoreboard until the second half.

"I thought in the first half we were kind of pressing, and you think shots will fall for you and they don't and you start feeling a little pressure," Emerine said. "I told them at halftime, 'Lighten up. Just go play.'"

It didn't take long. Aubrey, a junior, attacked the center of the field and scored the first of her three goals 34 seconds into the second half.

"Karissa presses a lot and she gets frustrated when she doesn't score. I told her, 'Relax. You'll get a couple,'" Emerine said.

She got more than a couple. After Hannah Bryan scored in the 53rd minute to push the Pryor lead to 3-0, Aubrey converted a pair of penalty kicks against Memorial keeper Victoria Gonzalez in the 59th and 76th minutes, gleefully tossing a T-shirt into the home stands after each goal.

Emerine was pleased with the result, but said his team has plenty to improve on before facing Tahlequah next week.

"We're going to have to get better. It's good to get the win we're supposed to get, but we've got to get better," Emerine said.

The Pryor boys were not as fortunate in the late game, as the Chargers got three early goals to trip the Tigers 3-0.

The loss dropped Pryor to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in district play.
