LOCUST GROVE — Locust Grove is the favorite to win their own tournament.

The Pirates are 4-2 and play Salina in the first round of the Bank of Locust Grove Invitational Tournament.

LG has already beaten Salina 86-55 earlier in the season at home. The Pirates have never lost to the Wildcats at the Pirate Arena and look to continue the streak.

"I think that if we keep our heads straight in the Salina game, it will be an easy win," junior Taylor Halpain said.

The Wildcats are struggling with a 1-9 record and looking to bounce back from an overtime loss against Chouteau.

Salina showed improvement their last outing against Chouteau, but it will be tough for the Wildcats to improve on a 31-point deficit from their last match-up at Locust Grove.

The Pirates are coming off a tough home loss against 10th-ranked Ft. Gibson but will play Keys before the tournament begins.

The Cougars wil lalso be competing in the invitational tournament.

Locust Grove's toughest challenge in the tournament might be the Adair Warriors.

The Warriors are 8-2 and ranked seventh in Class 3A.

Locust Grove will have a challenging road to the championship, but the team believes they can produce a solid outcome.

"I think if we play hard and smart we will have a really good outcome in the tournament," Halpain said.

LG begins tournament play Jan. 8 in the final game of the evening.
