Chouteau hosts first of two scrimmages

CHOUTEAU, OK — Chouteau opened its scrimmage season Friday, hosting Porter and Wyandotte.

Head coach Mark Jones said his team is still making mistakes, but the Wildcats are making progress compared to last year's squad.

"We still need to improve defensively, but I saw a lot of improvement over last year," Jones said.

Jones saw plenty of good things from running back tandem Austin Hershberger and Garrett Grossman. Joining Hershberger and Grossman in the backfield is senior quarterback Doug Mynahan, who is taking over the offense after a year-long absence.

"He's stepping up. He's stepping into the leadership role, he's feeling more comfortable. He sat out his junior year, but he's come back and really stepped up for us," Jones said.

Jones spoke highly of Mynahan's primary target, Mikel Ford. Jones also praised Brock Couch's performance at tackle and David King's play at center and on the defensive line.

The key points Jones will stress heading into the next week of practice will be staying on blocking assignments and adjusting plays at the line of scrimmage.

"I'm proud of their effort," Jones said. "I told them going into it that I could live with some mistakes, but I can't live with poor effort. They gave pretty good effort tonight. We're excited about the year to come."

Chouteau will host another scrimmage Friday before opening Week 1 at home against Warner Sept. 5.
