PRYOR, OK —
“Scripture says to take care of our orphans, and foster kids are today's orphans.”
Nicole Rouge says the way Your Place Church's Foster Care events got started is that simple.
“We do a Foster Care event twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. We always have dinner, games, give aways, hair cuts and new clothes for all the foster kids that come through,” said Rouge, event leader. “In the spring we do a 1,000 Easter egg hunt and in the fall we do a costume contest.”
Their Foster Care Fall Festival was Tuesday and had over 100 people in attendance.
“Our main objective is to not only provide these kids with a great night and great memories, but to help these families out by giving them brand new outfits, socks, undergarments and haircuts if needed,” said Rouge.
This year Rouge and her team were able to give out over 268 outfits. The items were set up like they would be in a store, allowing the kids to go “shopping” for items they liked. Foster parents caring for babies were given vital items like diapers, wipes and bottles.
“This year not only did the chamber donate all the money for us to buy 40 pizzas, but Homeland also donated 40lbs of oranges for the kids to have. First Council Hotel and Casino donated 100 bottles of water. Toys R Us and Children's Place gave us 25 percent off out entire total when our team went down to Tulsa to purchase the rest of the clothes needed after the congregation of Your Place Church donated new outfits and candy all month. We were also given a great deal at the Pryor Pumpkin Patch when we got 200 mini spooky pumpkins,” said Rouge.
Nicole Deatherage, founder of Fostering World Changers, a foster parent herself was blown away by the event.
“I went to the event and it was fantastic. They not only provided dinner but had games, costume contests, candy and prizes, haircuts and even gave each child a new outfit, socks and underwear,” said Deatherage. “One of my babies got a new outfit, diapers, wipes and formula. Such a huge blessing.”
“A family came to see me and she had her two foster kids and two other kids. She told e the other children had been her first foster children and even though their mom got them back that mother knew she had bonded with them and allows her to be a part of their lives. I thought that was absolutely beautiful,” said Rouge when asked her favorite part of the event.
