Choose your master carefully

On The Go

God gives man the power of choice.  He did not create us as robots who simply do the things He wants us to do.  Rather, we are free moral agents, given the opportunity to choose between life and good or death and evil (Deuteronomy 30:15).  God admonishes us to choose life, but He does not force us to do so.  We read in Jeremiah 21:8, “Thus says the Lord: Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death.”

It is unimaginable that so many people make the choice of death and evil, but most people do just that.  Jesus said in Matthew 7:13-14, “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.  Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.”  Notice that Jesus says most people will be eternally lost.

As a free moral agent, in reality man only chooses whom he will obey.  The two choices are Satan and God.  Paul asks in Romans 6:16, “Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?”  We can only serve the one we obey.  When we obey Satan, we are serving him.  When we obey God, we are serving God.  Those are the only two choices we have.

Satan is so deceptive, he can take people captive and make them believe that they are free and in total control of their own lives.  Satan has had thousands of years of experience tempting man with the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.  He convinces young people that drugs and alcohol will lead to fun and freedom.  They often take the bait, not realizing that they are getting caught in his trap.  Many times it is years before they recognize the fact that they have been taken captive.

All too often, what promises to bring fun and freedom actually brings addiction, sorrow, and possibly even death.  While trying to take control, the victim actually loses control.  Unknowing-ly, he becomes a slave of Satan and does what he wants (2 Timothy 2:26).  Satan is using him to destroy his own life and many times, the lives of others.

Satan has a whole army out recruiting for him.  They tell people this is the way to enjoy life.  They encourage giving up inhibitions, and they promise freedom and happiness.  2 Peter 2:19 says, “While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage.”  By the time they realize that they are enslaved, it is too late.

Don’t be deceived.  Satan doesn’t care anything about you.  A life of serving Satan leads to death and evil.  Loved ones will be maimed or killed.  Homes will be broken.  Dreams will be shattered.  Friendships will be lost.  Your life will be destroyed.

The alternative is to serve God.  Unlike Satan, God loves you.  He proved that in giving His Son to die for you.  He wants what is best for you.  God will supply all your needs (Philippians 4:19).  And we are promised in Romans 8:28 that all things will work together for good to those who love God.

Satan does not require his followers to love him, because he does not love them.  In fact, he does not even want his followers to realize that he exists.  That makes it easier for him to ensnare them.  But rest assured, the devil does exist!

Love the Lord because He loves you.  Prove your love by obeying Him.  I John 5:3 says, “For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.”  Make the choice to serve God as your Master, and you will enjoy the abundant life.
