Obituary- Brownie Nichols

Funeral services for Brownie Nichols, 92, Salina, are Friday, Feb. 15,  2 p.m., at the First Baptist Church in Salina. Pastors Kennith Stacy, Tex Gaskins and Matt Wheeler will officiate and burial will follow at Ross-Mayes Cemetery, Salina.  Services are entrusted to Stephens Memorial Chapel.

Nichols was born April 2, 1920, in Clarson, Ky. to Elijah Japez and Sarah S. (Skaggs) Nichols. He died Feb 12.

Nichols lived in Salina since the early 1960’s. He was a delivery driver and plant manager for Union Gas for several years. He married Lucille Anne Shutt on March 29, 1956, in Winfield, Kan.; she preceded him in death on Jan. 1, 2007.  After he retired Nichols did wood working, made crafts and furniture. He was an avid square dancer and had made numerous friends within the square dancing circle. For the last three years he made a daily trip to the East Side Café in Pryor. Spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren was what Nichols enjoyed the most. He was a very outgoing person who never met a stranger and he will be missed by all that knew him.

Nichols is survived by daughters Nancy Phelan and husband Jim of Salina, Carol Wheeler and husband Mike of Catoosa, four grandchildren, Julie, Sara, Laura and Matt, four great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Carson, Kaydence and Asher, sisters Edna Foster of Tulsa and Darlean McClure of Kansas, numerous nieces and nephews and special friend Grace Eaton. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, 10 brothers and sisters.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, Feb. 14, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Stephens Memorial Chapel.

In lieu of other remembrances donations can be made to a charity of one’s choice in memory of Nichols.
