Norma Christine Grass

PRYOR, OK — Norma Christine Grass was born on Aug. 29, 1923, at Shady Point, to William Lawrence and Mary Helen (Grider) Langley. She died Monday, May 6, at her home. She was 89.

Grass attended school in Locust Grove. She graduated with the class of 1942 and had held the title of Locust Grove High School homecoming queen. On Jan. 15, 1945, Norma Christine Langley and William Patterson Grass were united in marriage. She was preceded in death by her husband who died Jan. 16, 1995. The couple had been married for 50 years and 1 day.

Grass was a lifetime resident of the Locust Grove area. She worked at the powder plant during WWII as well as both Parkhill Nursing Homes in Locust Grove. She was known to babysit for several local families and teachers throughout the years. As a young mother, she took her family to the First United Methodist Church in Locust Grove and later followed her husband to the different churches he pastored in northeast Oklahoma. Over the years, she taught Sunday School and most recently was a member of the Smith Chapel Free Will Baptist Church in Rose. Two years ago, she helped with Vacation Bible School.

Grass enjoyed sewing, cooking and tending flowers.  She was known to take in many cats over the years, feeding them gravy and wieners.  She enjoyed going to church and listening to music, where she spent many hours watching the Gaither Homecoming videos.

Grass is survived by: five children: William Michael "Bill" Grass of Tulsa; Marilyn Bates and husband Bucky of Locust Grove; Jackie Grass and wife Carolyn of Chickasha; Connie Ingram and husband Larry of Locust Grove; and Gerald Grass and wife Diane of Pryor; 14 grandchildren: Lisa Becerra and husband Bruce of Pryor; Shawn Bates and wife Melissa of Locust Grove; Tess Cannon of Chickasha; Scott Grass and wife Vanessa of Mustang; Angela Phillips and husband John of Chickasha; Jacklyn Hamil and husband Donnie of Locust Grove; Jennifer Alberty and husband Shane of Wickliffe; Stacey Morris of Tulsa; Kristi Grass of Stillwater; Lara Grass of Tulsa; Stephanie Taylor and husband Robert of Locust Grove; Jeff Grass and wife Christina of Locust Grove; Faith Lewis and husband Josh of Rose; and Hope Grass of Pryor; 27 great-grandchildren; four brothers: Gene Langley and wife Betty of Siloam Springs, Ark.; Pete Langley and wife Arlene of Broken Arrow; Mike Langley and wife Carol of Nevada and Dean Langley and wife Ginger of Palm Springs, Calif.; close friends Dan and Gearl Dene Cunningham of Rose; and Frankie Keener of Locust Grove; and many others.

Grass was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Wilma Shapley, brothers Dale Langley and Rex Langley; and granddaughter Amy Grass.

The family would like to thank and acknowledge the dedication of her caretakers the last several months: Betty Harless, Lynnette Littlefield, and Glenna Tate, as well as the nurses from the Hospice of the Cherokees.

Funeral services are

2 p.m., Thursday, May 9, at the First Free Will Baptist Church in Locust Grove. The Rev. Gerald Grass and the Rev. Doug Parker will officiate. Interment will follow at the Little Rock Indian Cemetery in Locust Grove. Services have been entrusted to the Locust Grove Funeral Home.
