Obituary: John Willis Buffington, Jr.

Funeral services for John Willis Buffington, Jr., 59, Kenwood, are 2 p.m. Monday, at Euwasha Baptist Church, Kenwood. Pastors Richard Budder and Eric Smith will officiate and burial will follow at Ribbon Cemetery. Services are entrusted to Stephens Memorial Chapel.

Buffington was born May 22, 1952 in Claremore to John, Sr. and Dora (Mouse) Buffington. He died Thursday in Kenwood.

Buffington graduated from Sequoyah High School, Tahlequah,, with the class of 1971; he also attended Seneca Indian School in Wyandotte. Buffington went to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M for one year. Buffington played bass with the Buffington Brothers Band and had played with the band all of his life. He enjoyed watching OU games and OKC Thunder Basketball. He was an avid reader and he studied his Cherokee Syllabary. Buffington made his home in Piedmont, northwest of Oklahoma City, and moved to Tulsa in later years and lived there until he married Tonya Pigeon in Dec. 7,1991 in Kenwood, and lived in Kenwood until his death.

Buffington is survived by his wife Tonya of the home, mother Dora Bradford of Spavinaw; eight brothers, Dan Buffington of Langley, Dwight Buffington of Jay, Randy Buffington and wife Loretta of Spavinaw, Glen Buffington and wife Eldean of Strang, Jim Buffington and wife Lela of Eucha, Mark Buffington of Salina, Tommy Buffington of Spavinaw and Cleophas Simon of Claremore; four sisters, Doreen Breeding of Tulsa, Sophronia Buffington of Lenapah, Jackie Fencer of Jay and Connie Melton of Oklahoma City. He is also survived by his in-laws Roberta and Billy Sapp of Salina, special niece Jessi Rae Jordan of Spavinaw and several other nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his father and two brothers, Clay Leon Buffington and David Spencer Buffington.

Viewing is 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, at Stephens Memorial Chapel and a wake service is Sunday evening at the Buffington residence in Kenwood.
