PRYOR, OK —
Funeral services for Leon Rice, 68, Tahlequah, are today, Sept. 26, 2 p.m., at the First Baptist Church in Salina. Pastor Kennith Stacy and Charlie Newton will officiate and burial will follow at Hogan Cemetery, Locust Grove. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol Honor Guard will conduct graveside rites. Services are entrusted to Stephens Memorial Chapel, Pryor.
Rice was born June 26, 1945, in Pryor to Thurman and Maude (Combs) Rice. He died Sept. 23 in Claremore.
He was a lifetime resident of Mayes County. He moved to Tahlequah in the early 1990’s from Chouteau. He married Jeanell Davidson on March 17, 1967, in Miami; she preceded him in death on Oct. 6, 2010. He attended the First Baptist Church in Chouteau for many years and recently he was attending Welling General Baptist. He spent most of his life in law enforcement, working for several local law enforcement agencies and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Lake Patrol Division where he attained the rank of lieutenant. After retiring from the Lake Patrol, he went to work for the Oklahoma Corporation Commission doing motor vehicle enforcement. He had many odd jobs throughout the years, all to raise four children. One of those included retiring from the Chouteau Fire Department as a captain after 20 years of service. Rice was an avid hunter and fisherman. He never met a stranger and loved to spend time with family, especially investing time with his grandkids. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Rice is survived by children Toney Davis and Ellie of Mazie, Janet Hance and husband Neil of Tahlequah, Tommy Davis and wife Charlotte of Salina, Robin Young and husband Nick of Tahlequah; nine grandchildren, Amanda, Toney, Jr., Chad, Lesley, Audra, Dustin, Casey, Amber and Ashlee; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters Lois Messer and husband Larry of Eufaula, Carolyn Engles and husband Pat of Pryor; brother Larry Rice and wife Peggy of Claremore; brother-in-law Curtis Owens of Claremore, several nieces, nephews and a host of friends. In addition to his wife Jeanell, he was preceded in death by his parents Thurman and Maude Rice, sister Leona Owens and infant brother Donald Rice.
