Graveside services for Hugh Roberts, 85, formerly of Locust Grove, are Friday, Jan. 17, 1 p.m., at Davenport Cemetery in Davenport. Viewing will be Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Key Funeral Home in Locust Grove. Services are under the direction of Key Funeral Home in Locust Grove.
Roberts died Jan. 14, at Fayetteville, Ark. He was born Aug. 12, 1928, at Davenport, to Herbert Carlton and Lula Mae (Clark) Roberts. He married Bonnie Louise Adams on June 30, 1959, at the Church of Christ in Tulsa. He was preceded in death by his parents Herbert Carlton Roberts and Lula Mae Clark, daughter Lois June (Judy Shaffer) Cox, grandson Gerald (Jerry) Ray Taff and brother Lawrence Herbert Roberts. He is survived by his wife; son Clarence Jimmy Shaffer and wife Lilia of Tahlequah; daughter Joyce (Joy Shaffer) Jacobs and her husband Kris of Fayetteville, Ark.; five grandchildren, Sondra Renee (Shaffer) Hernensen, Jimmie Dee Shaffer, Terri Lynn (Shaffer) Long and husband Gene, Christopher Dwayne Taff and wife Michelle, Richard (Rick) Edmond Taff; several great-grandchildren; several cousins in Davenport and Claremore.
Roberts grew up in Davenport, joining the U.S. Army in November 1950 at Oklahoma City. He was honorably discharged at Camp Collins, Colo. He worked for Douglas Aircraft in Tulsa, where he met his wife. He later had his own barber shop in West Tulsa. In 1961, he accepted a position as a clerk in the Tulsa Post Office. In 1963, he transferred to the Locust Grove, post office working as a clerk, rural carrier and officer-in-charge before retiring in 2001.
Bonnie and Hugh were recognized for their many charitable activities by being chosen as the Grand Marshals at the 2005 Founders Day Parade in Locust Grove. They were also recognized three times as Citizens of the Year in their community.
