Growing pains: Adair School expands

PRYOR, OK — It will be worth the wait to see the completion of construction work at Adair Public Schools.

“The projected date of construction and renovation completion has been changed from Aug. 16 to Oct. 1, when we will have our Open House,” Superintendent Tom Linihan said,

The new additions are none too soon, since the school’s 2014 enrollment of 295 students has nearly doubled since the school first opened in 1975, outgrowing spaces in every direction.

The following additions and renovations are en route to completion:

— The high school students will see the benefits of a major renovation to their section of the school when they will be greeted by an entrance to the building. They will gain five new classrooms, which includes a science lab and Family and Consumer Science Department (with a kitchen and sewing area), as well as a high school commons area.

— The middle school will gain two classrooms and a wall will be removed to give the middle school their own commons area.

— The fourth and fifth grades will gain two classrooms.

— The elementary school will have two early educational classes added.

— The office will have an addition, as well as gain one of the former classrooms to extend the space.

Currently, students going to and from school either wait in the gym prior to class starting or sit in the cafeteria. The new commons spaces will give them a place to go.

The school is installing new heat and air conditioning campus-wide.

Portable buildings are being used to accommodate the expansion.

“We all are very excited about the additions. Vargas Construction Company has done an excellent job.  We cannot wait to show everyone when it is all done,” Linihan said.
