PRYOR — Rockin’ G Animal Shelter is Pryor’s city-run animal shelter, located north of town. “Rockin’ G has transferred at least 168 pets since January. We pride ourself on transferring pets to no-kill shelters in Oklahoma, Minesota, Illinois and several other states,” said Kathy LaValley, a shelter volunteer.

“Transferring a pet costs the city anywhere from $25 and $50. It costs the taxpayers about $80 to euthanize an animal,” said LaValley.

Rockin’ G has lost funding to transport pets out of the facility.

“We used to transport 12 or more dogs at a time, but now we can barely do one or two at a time since we’ve lost that funding,” said Pryor Animal Shelter manager Lynn Hathhorn.

As a result, the shelter has reached full capacity and is forced to turn away animals.

A friend of the shelter has come to the rescue. Private donor, Dr. Loren Martin of Big Cabin became aware of the situation and wanted to help. Martin has agreed to match any donations made to Rockin’ G between now and Dec. 25, up to $5,000.

Donation boxes can be found around Pryor at Eastside Cafe, Thomas Restaurant, Maurices, and Stage. While the fund-matching ends Christmas day, the shelter will always accept donations and volunteers.
