House floor activity now on Twitter

ADAIR — OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma House of Representatives on Monday began posting Twitter updates containing up-to-the-minute information on floor activity.

As bills are called for hearings on the House floor, tweets containing the bill number and links to information on the bill will be automatically posted in real time on the House Twitter page, @OKHouseofReps.

The Twitter page will also be automatically updated when the House sets the time it will convene.

“We’re always pursuing new ways to inform and involve the public in the business we’re conducting on their behalf. Our new automated Twitter updates will be a great step forward in the House’s ongoing efforts to make the legislative process more transparent and open to the public,” said House Speaker Kris Steele , R-Shawnee.

In recent years, the House website, okhouse.gov, has undergone several upgrades to make legislative documents and proceedings easily accessible online.

Video of floor proceedings and audio of committee hearings is streamed live and later archived online. Floor video archives are bookmarked by bill number so the public can view floor activity on any bill they have an interest in at any time. Audio from interim study meetings is also archived online, along with accompanying documents presented at those interim studies.

The House website’s legislation tracking features have also been upgraded in recent years to enable all versions of bills, amendments and related legislative documents to be posted online as soon as they are filed.
